Silent Witness follows the work of forensic pathologist Dr. Sam Ryan, played by Amanda Burton. The series was created by an ex-police officer, Nigel McCrery - who has also published five Silent Witness novels based on the series, entitled:

The police were no closer to finding out what happened when a second body was pulled from the river, so Leo decided to make his own enquiries. This lead him to a West African church nearby. There, Leo saw an exorcism of a young boy who was Kindoki – possessed. The Pastor, Funmi Lambo, insisted there was no violence in his church, and that far worse would happen to the boy if he were taken to Africa for exorcism. But on leaving work that night, Leo found a chilling message left for him on his car, a warning to stay away.

Political pressure saw the RAF washing their hands of the body. But when Harry carried out the post mortem, he discovered that far from being the hero he thought he was defending, the pilot had been taking drugs to help tackle his insomnia following his experiences in Iraq. Harry had to tell the pilot’s father that as a result of his post mortem, his son would almost certainly be blamed for the crash. Later, a body was brought into the mortuary. The coroner suspected it was a case of pilot suicide. Harry opened the body bag: it was Henry Markham.

A further suicide victim from a few weeks ago also has these drugs in her body, but she had no connection with the men. The team attend the scene of a drive-by shooting outside a nightclub. It appears that the club was at the centre of a drugs racket, and the shooting was part of a turf war. A bullet is found on the other side of the road, suggesting that someone from the club fired back at the car. The team discover that pressure is being put on the owner of the club. Another gang want to buy him out, and if he doesn't agree, he'll be forced to fight. Finding the weapons used is the key to working out who is responsible and stopping any further shootings. The gun used in the attack shows up in the possession of a thirteen-year-old boy, Wayne. Harry is convinced he is covering for someone, and is not the killer. Eventually he persuades Wayne to give him the name of the man he's protecting. Harry promises not to tell the police, but of course that's exactly what he does. The turf-war is ended, but although lives have been saved Wayne has been lost to the street gangs.
