NCIS: Los Angles - Higher Power - recap

NCIS: Los Angeles poster

Written by : published Thursday 15th December 2011

A couple of snogging young adults hide in an office and almost get caught by a  security guard. He turns and gets attacked from behind by a mugger in the dark office, and a college professor is attacked.

The Parker Pony is sold out and Hanna has to have it for Christmas for his daughter. He instructs Eric to by it in an online auction for him and keep tabs. Hetty tells them Happy Holidays. She is hosting a drinks party later. Attendance is mandatory at one of Hetty’s drinks party.

The CIT engineering department is where the guard was when attacked. This is the  lab of Gareth Carlyle, an expert on EMP. This man knows an individual EMP blast can destroy electronic device in a forty mile radius. The flux compression generator is being invented. Copper coils generate a pulse that can cripple a chip in a control tower, bus, hospital, computer, or LAPD operations.

Carlyle is ex-Navy. They talk to Carlyle at the college and he did a stint overseas. He was too burnt out by Desert Storm. They ask about who would steal his device. He says disinterest is more what he is up against. The DoD cut way back on the EMP budget.

Kenzi and Deaks meet the guard. He is back on duty despite the ether. He blames the kissing couple were in on it, because they got him away from the desk. The guard says that Carlyle remembers his birthday and is a nice guy. They say he didn’t make tenure. A shame.

Hanna and Callen spot Carlyle running away, not to a lecture. They trap him but he lies to them about running away from the elevator. He drops his keys trying to get into the car. Callen and Hanna get him and ask what he is doing.

The flux was in the trunk of his car. It was set to go off by someone in the Engineering department. It got stolen. At the boathouse he says he will help but in the wrong hands it could be disastrous.

Kenzi and Deaks investigate background on the professor. The Commission decided he was not worth investing in.

They talk to his daughter. The father’s research is good but being ignored. Deaks says is he working on anything new. She says he lost faith. It was terrible. She last saw him a month ago.

Callen says Kenzi is going back to school. Her background and appearance will fool and attract the students. Kenzi walks into the college engineering department, saying she starts the next semester. They introduce her around.

One man does not seem friendly. He says he doesn’t shake hands with women. He asks a lot of questions. Kenzi fences with him giving answers and Deaks pretends to be a janitor and spills something.

Deaks goes in the locker room while Kenzi distracts the men graduate students.
Deaks find something in one of the lockers. Eric identifies an M-47 incendiary bomb. Filled with Napalm or phosphorus from Vietnam, it might leak. Chester’s locker. Deaks has handled it and freaks out.

Hanna keeps Eric bidding on the auction for the pony toy. Nell apologizes to her mother for not making Christmas. The staff are working Christmas and must use their back stories to falsify what they really do. Nell says she is a TV news editor and Eric is a professional blackjack player until he got banned from Vegas. Deaks tries to get in on Kenzi’s holiday plans. She is grim and does not buy into the kidding.

They watch the garage footage where the Professor’s car was parked. Santa drives a Gremlin. He sprays the camera with fake snow. Santa has the flux. Callen says they have to find the Gremlin. Chester’s place is filled with bombs bullets and ballistic missiles. They set off something that hums and then bursts with deadly sparks and they hunch in the corner.

Keni says it is a Tesla coil. They have to short it out with a wet shirt. She says for him to take off his shirt. He has to pee or Perish but Deaks spots a goldfish bowl. He wets the shirt and throws the bundled shirt at the Tesla coil. It shorts out and the shirt starts burning but the sparks stop.

They talk to Chester at the boathouse he says the Tesla coil was to scare intruders. He says if the flux is in danger to go after Carlyle’s assistant she scares him.

Han says driving a Gremlin is a crime. The owner did a suicide. Donated his car to charity. El Aziz was his roommate. They track his credit card spending and wonder how he can  roommate can afford $800 sushi. Kenzi turns down Deaks coming to Hawaii. (This is Hawaii 5-0 business).

Nell does the web-cam thing with the family. Eric jumps up and meets the family. They find the Gremlin and hope to get prints on the door. Hanna agrees for a $500 bid for the pony. Eric tells Hanna they got sniped with a $1,001 bid.

The car is hot and getting hotter. Callen notices. They see it explode from inside. Hanna says he only saw a car do that once in training. A chemist showed him how to do it.

Nell says on the Gremlin some Nitrocellulose plastic triggered the puff of smoke. Kenzi reports another break in at Carlyle’s lab. An amplifying device was stolen that makes the flux explosion much much worse and could destroy Los Angeles.

The professor says a nine mile hit will hit a target zone. Anything with a circuit board or chip is immediately fired with  enough nodes the whole system goes down. One or to months and then hospitals loss of water purification no food refrigeration. Rioting trauma and disease

Aziz has has uncle’s plane and Bevan has cash for weapons. Kenzi and Deaks approach Bevan. He has a truck. The Professor says those idiots think the can control the cone of EMP surge but they can’t. Hospitals and every structure will absorb the signal. Pacemakers will also be threatened.

Bevan is taken to the boathouse and Kenzi and Deaks discuss the penalty for accessory to weapons theft. Bevan breaks and says the whole scheme is it is  part of robbery. That night at midnight some bank downtown will be hit. They collect nonmagnetic tools. .

Hanna and Callen pose as airport inspectors. Asiz says the are being singled out. Hanna says in Farsi to shut up or he’ll throw his a** in jail. They find only toys and clothes in the donation boxes.

Hetty says Callen and Hanna better be working on Plan A and Pan B or she will be identifying them from dental records.

In the car Hanna implies he will tell his daughter Callen let her down when she does not get the pony toy. Deaks and Kenzi are aghast. They find the building with the bank in it.
They shadow the man working with a blowtorch on the wall. Deaks says Not a lot of veggie tacos in the Penn.

Kenzi pursues and tells Nell to close the parking garage. Hanna and Callen find the assembled flux capacitor on he roof. Eric says he has to do it on his own.

Liquid nitrogen is what Callen uses to isolate the power supply from the bomb timer housing. Plan B is pouring the liquid nitrogen into the power housing and throwing the ropes over the side of the building. Callen and Hanna jump just as he top of the building blows up.

The ropes are not very long and as they dangle Hetty calls and says next time think of  packing parachutes.

The professor says he is not a bad man. He says he can’t get a message to his daughter but he says no. The daughter is escorted him.

Hetty throws her drinks party with a cask. Flown all the way from Yorkshire England. Nell makes Sig Sauer and Glock sugar cookies from the reconfigured burn room incinerator.

Callen has a gift for Hanna. They give him the Parker Pony. Hetty says she knows Mr. Beal has quite the action figure collection

Deaks gives Kenzi a weird botanical Hawaaian lotion.

tvqueen

I like to watch TV shows from classic eras as well as contemporary drama and comedy. Science Fiction is fun, and shows like the Cape and Fringe keep hope alive that the medium that produced Space 1999 is alive. Comedy such as 30 Rock is usually, good, but not always. I like Survivor but it has so little to do with survivor skills I am disappointed. Appointment viewing is Grey's Anatomy, NCIS LA, The CSI series for New York and Las Vegas and Miami, with a special shout out for the new Hawaii Five O. Gordon Ramsay's Hells Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares are top of the line viewing for the drama comedy Gordon's character and the business lessons they teach.
