Reminder: The one where Ted leads a field trip and Marshall inspires his boss.

Ted gets to lead a group of students all over to look at the architecture of New York, and from the very beginning, it's a flop. He's not allowed into the construction site on his own building. He doesn't knwo what to say. Half the kids thought it was archaeology and left. He eventually just drags them around after him as he goes about the rest of his day feeling sorry for himself, but he does manage to inspire one guy, and that makes it all better... even if he is inspired mostly because he'd get to  hang out at a bar with his friends by 4pm every day.

Meanwhile, Marshall learns that his idealized new boss has gone soft, and it's not what he wants to do with his life. He confronts him about it and learns that the newest reports say they're all doomed, so he's just trying to make people happy while they still have time. For a while, Marshall is stunned and scared, but the fact that he's having a baby with Lilly and wants to give that baby a better life inspires him to try harder. His dedication, in tern, brings back the hard-nosed eco-warrior he thought he'd been hired by.

This week's episode is brought to you by hope for the future. Sometimes the separate storylines don't line up so well, but this week, they sort of had the same message at the end: Ted just wants to make something better and just wants someone to appreciate it, while Marshall just wants to give his kid a better world than he got. It's heartwarming, really. Through a lot of this show's run, Marshall has been the heart, the one that's got the dreams and holds ideals even when the world wants to break him down, and it's always great to see when he can inspire someone else to do better.

And this show is usally sort of an idealized version of the world, a place where problems happily iron out in a half hour and where nothing is really all that dire, so when Marshall found out that we're all doomed, it was something that had to be put right-- which gives us, here in the real world, the idea that maybe we can put things right, too.
