In the final episode of this fascinating documentary series, Rageh Omaar concludes by revealing details about Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) final years.

Following the Siege of Medina, Muhammad had seen off all his opponents. After the event he received revelations which gained him access to divine power. Although he had gained power in Medina he remained modest throughout his lifetime. He listened to the people and they sought advice from him.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received a number of revelations. In Medina he received revelations on how people should live their lives. A moral code was revealed to Muhammad, which was called ‘Sharia Law’. Sharia Law is the code of conduct and religious law which Muslim’s should follow. However Sharia Law did not come into law until two centuries after Muhammad’s death.

During his lifetime, Muhammad abolished blood feuds and women gained equal rights. Muhammad had now gained a secure power base in Medina. He tried to strike alliances with the other tribes in Medina. Muhammad did this by marrying into these tribes. He had several wives at once. However in the documentary it is revealed that Muhammad has been open to criticism because he was possibly married to a 9 year old girl called Aisha. After the death of Muhammad, she became a politically aware woman. Muhammad married these women to gain political alliances.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) received a further revelation in regards to women. The revelation stated that females should wear a veil to cover themselves. In the documentary it is revealed by the guest speakers that there is no definite requirement in Islam for women to fully cover themselves. It is a matter of personal choice.

Muhammad then turned towards Mecca. He told his followers that the Kaaba had become essential to their worship. However access to the Kaaba was controlled by Muhammad’s enemies, the Quraysh. Muhammad announced the Hajj to his followers. They would walk unarmed into Mecca. However the Quraysh learnt of Muhammad’s plans and they sent a cavalry to stop Muhammad and his followers from entering Mecca. The Quraysh insisted that Muhammad and his followers could return for Hajj in a year’s time. In return, Muhammad had to sign a contract in which he stated he was not the Messenger of God. Faced with this humiliation, Muhammad struck out the words Messenger Of God. The terms of the treaty were humiliating for Muhammad, but he wanted to defeat his enemies through peace. Afterwards, Muhammad received a revelation which stated that signing the treaty was not a defeat.

This started a campaign of non-violence for Muhammad. It was a turning point and it showed that he was willing to suffer utter humiliation. Muhammad was allowed to return to Mecca by the Quraysh for 3 days. The people of Mecca observed how sincere Muhammad and his followers were as they entered the Kaaba. A year later, the Quraysh broke the truce by attacking one of Muhammad’s allies. It was a fatal mistake. Muhammad gathered an army of 10,000 men and marched towards Mecca. The Quraysh were powerful to resist. They expected Muhammad to launch a bloody feud. Instead of violence, Muhammad declared that he forgave all his former enemies. He announced that no one should be forced to convert to Islam. This remarkable event marked the end of the Quraysh’s control of Mecca.  Muhammad and his followers marched into the Kaaba and destroyed the hundreds of effigies inside. Muhammad ended the tribalism and he returned to Medina. The rest of Arabia joined his cause; however Muhammad did not impose an Islamic state.

Muhammad had laid the foundations for Islam, but at this time he was 60 years old. He performed his first and last pilgrimage. He returned to Mecca to say his Final Sermon. Muhammad sat on a camel in front of a huge gathering of followers. It was a deeply emotional speech. He summarised what he and his followers had achieved.  He said words which would become a lasting legacy for the generations to come.

After his sermon, Muhammad returned to Medina. He died on the 8th of June, 632. Muhammad was buried with his face turned towards Mecca. After the death of the Prophet, his message spread across the world.

In little over 20 years, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) changed the course of the world forever. He spread the message of God and created a religion which would gain over a billion followers. He laid the foundations for Islam, and spread the message that peace, not war, was the answer to troubles.

This documentary series has been truly exceptional. It has been beautifully well made and the guest speakers which have featured in each episode and they have provided further insights into the life of Muhammad. The three episodes are very educational and they are relevant to Muslims and non-Muslims across the world.
