Good-bye Christopher Meloni, we’ll miss you as Law & Order SVU returns with new face main image

Law & Order without Detective Elliot Stabler?  Say it isn’t so!  Unfortunately, it’s true.  When NBC’s Law & Order SVU returns this fall they will be minus Christopher Meloni who starred in the show as well as on the HBO series “Oz” from 1999-2003.  Meloni’s character has been central to the story lines and his relationship with Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, made the two one of TV’s most popular crime fighting duos.  Are SVU fans ready for not only Meloni’s departure but the addition of new characters as well?  It seems that much of the weight has been placed on Hargitay’s shoulders as viewers will undoubtedly look to her to bring the familiarity the show has achieved with the show’s fans for the past 12 years.

The new Law & Order SVU returns to NBC on September 21, 2011 at 10:00 pm, and will feature newcomers Danny Pino and Kelli Giddish.  Diane Neal, who plays Casey Novak, will return to the show along with Ice T and Richard Belzer.  Only time will tell how viewers take to the new characters and as history shows us, fans don’t accept the disappearance of a main character whom they’ve come to know and love for 12 seasons to easily.  Some are asking whether or not Law & Order SVU can survive without Meloni.

Mariska Hargitay spoke about the change and said, “It’s been different this year,” but said she enjoys working with Pino and has high hopes for the show.  Neal stated that it was strange without Christopher Meloni but believes Mariska Hargitay can carry the show.

What do you think about the changes?  Will you continue to watch now that Meloni has decided to leave?  Check out the video below where cast mates discuss the changes and season 13.
