On May 4, 2011, American Idol contestant Haley Reinhart surprised fans when she sang an unreleased song by Lady Gaga, “You and I.”  The song selection was suggested by Jimmy Iovine and Haley told the audience that she received permission from Lady Gaga via phone to sing the song.  Jennifer Lopez remarked that she didn’t feel at this stage in the competition Haley should be performing songs unfamiliar to home viewers and Jimmy Iovine commented that later Jennifer Lopez took him to task for making the suggestion.  Now it appears there may have been a bit more to the song choice as Fox announced that Lady Gaga will serve as a mentor to the top 4 American Idol finalists: James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart.

On May 5, 2011, during the results show, Jennifer Lopez performed her hit single “On the Floor” and debuted a clip from her new video.  The results were announced and Jacob Lusk and Lauren Alaina were in the bottom two.  Lauren took the selection very hard and was visibly shaken and upset.  Jacob remained stoic as Ryan Seacrest announced who would go home.  It was Jacob.

As has been the custom, special performances will be given on May 12, 2011 and new judge and Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler will premiere his new video “Feels so Good.” Season Six American Idol winner Jordin Sparks will perform.

In addition to this season’s excitement, Ryan Seacrest announced that auditions for Season 11 of American Idol will begin in St. Louis, Missouri on Tuesday, June 28, 2011.  Auditions will then take place in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, July 2, 2011 and in Charleston, South Carolina on Friday, July 22, 2011.

American Idol will air on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 8:00 – 9:30 PM ET and on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 8:00 – 9:00 pm ET.
