Ten of the films were screened at the 2000 Toronto International Film Festival and some shown on Channel 4 television. On Wednesday, February 6, 2002, the series won the Best TV Drama award at the sixth The South Bank Show awards at the Savoy Theatre in London.

Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) is Ireland's National Public Service Broadcaster and they made the initial productions of Mrs. Brown's Boys. The BBC wanted a new comedy show, slightly risque and BBC Scotland worked with RTE to produce the British version of Mrs. Brown's Boys. In the British version, Mrs. Brown's appearance is refreshed to look less of a drag act.
