Following in the footsteps of Gracie Fields, Margaret Rutherford, Angela Lansbury, Helen Hayes and Joan Hickson, Geraldine McEwan plays the part of elderly amateur sleuth Jane Marple, who has an extraordinary knack of solving crimes. The series is based on the Miss Marple stories by Agatha Christie, who's novels have also been adapted for Agatha Christie's Poirot. The first four novels to be adapted for ITV are The Murder At The Vicarage (1930), The Body In The Library (1942), A Murder Is Announced (1950) and 4:50 From Paddington (1957). Tommy and Tuppence Beresford are an ideal middle class couple of the 1920's. They have a comfortable life, but have become bored with the ordinary day to day routine. When offered the opportunity to play detective and help out Scotland Yard in the bargain, the couple take up residence in the offices of Blunt's International Detective Agency. Francesca Annis plays Tuppence as a fun loving flapper with a passion for hats, while James Warwick as Tommy is all boyish charm. Agatha Christie's Poirot logoPoirot is a UK series that brings to life Agatha Christie's Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot (played by David Suchet), whose sleuthing belongs chiefly in the 1920s and 1930s. Based in London, with the very English Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) as his Dr Watson, Poirot's field of operations ranges around Europe. The series has strong story lines, good production and acting, and an unmistakable flavour of the pre-war years. It won two BAFTA awards in 1990, then had BAFTA nominations as Best Drama Series in 1991 and 1992.Fifty of Agatha Christie's seventy-two Poirot stories have so far been filmed in this series, so there are a lot more still to look forward to.
